Kaiser Kills More Patients
Holy cats - I look away five seconds and Kaiser accelerates its bad karma spree! First of all I'm going to direct everyone to Kaiser Thrive to read excerpts from articles that require registration, and I will link to the Kaiser Thrive posts in appreciation of all the work they do.

First, the L.A. Times reports that five Kaiser hospitals are deadly for people with pneumonia. Not exactly a surprise, but I'm glad the L.A. Times is continuing to buck the Kaiser-payola situation in California.

Second, Bruce Turkstra got dumped from the interim CIO position. The scuttle is that Turkstra made a number of changes based on the expectation he would keep the job, so I'm sure mucho membership $$$ were dedicated to his golden parachute/bribe.

Here's yet another Kaiser employee telling it like it is. I'm still waiting for a sign that Kaiser is actually getting the message. What Kaiser does to its own employees is unacceptable, and this mistreatment trickles down to sabotage patient care. Moreover Kaiser's practice of destroying evidence and choosing to manipulate perceptions over fixing the problem effects both employees and patients. It's a cultural problem, and this tone is being set by Halvorson and his team. UPDATE: The HealthConnect Corruption Scandal seems to be on fire!

In support of the letter posted by the Kaiser employee, I heard similar sentiments expressed about the situation from a completely different source. I think the abusive managers are going to have a tough time talking their way out of this one. And, once again, SHAME ON KAISER HR, for letting this sort of thing go on and for punishing the employees who try to seek help.

Congratulations to Justen Deal for being named Health Care IT's 2006 Industry Figure of the Year by the Hissies! ROTFLMAO!!!

Another ROTFLMAO - Kaiser sends out the PR panzer division in an attempt to roll over the L.A. Times expose of HealthDisconnect. Here is the internal Kaiser koolaid memo.

BizJournals ran an article on Kaiser's blogging strategy. Or anti-blogging strategy: it's just more gross attempts to manipulate the media. The article covers how Kaiser chickened out of the Health Care Blogging Summit once it found out critics would be on the same stage. The conference organizer pointed out that this is part of Kaiser's larger transparency problem.

I need a breather, but if there's recent Kaiser stupidacity that I missed, please post a comment, and I'll be happy to add it here.

Update: I almost forgot the funniest thing of all! Some Northern California Kaiser employee tried to hack into Kaiser Thrive yesterday! How lame! But also ROTFLMAO because the attempt is pretty bad.

Update2: Wow, my blog is under visitor seige right now! Hi to all newcomers. If anyone is so inclined, I'm trying to raise money so I can represent patient advocates at the Health Care Blogging Summit in April. You can chip in here. This blog has no advertising or sponsorship, and I don't work regularly myself (thanks to Kaiser). I would appreciate any help.

What is wrong with those people?

I hadn't seen Kaiser's official response to the L.A. Times article before. These people have no shame at all. I've heard rumors that a patient died due to one of the outages, and that it was covered up. It's easier to believe that rumor than lame PR from an organization that is known to value its image over the truth (or members' lives).

I know - I'm still chuckling about it. This has to be Kaiser's worst attempt at a PR fake out ever!

It's like there's some sort of magnetic criticism-repelling field that KP has tried to set up around HealthConnect. Think about how long only you were pointing out the problems? You were a huge force in finally getting the mainstream media to pay attention to the SERIOUS SERIOUS problems with having a computer system that can kill people.

You have to be able to look at this ridiculously phony "official response" and think to yourself... If this is the best they can do to try and sweep all thus truth back under the rug... Then their days HAVE to be numbered.

Whenever you need some energy...think about the number of lives you've potentially helped save by keeping a spotlight on KP's worst practices...or the stories of patients you've courageously shared and got out.

I hope you know what a positive impact you've had.

Dan Rather always wanted to end his broadcasts this way. I think I'll end my post this way... :)

Courage!

(Something you've got plenty of!)

Thanks, kind of you to say. :-)

Ps. The phony is so strong I almost got an electic shock from it.

LOL, zzzip, zzap...

The rug that is being used to sweep all that junk/truth back under must be one pretty darn big and worn out rug!

My God, let's hope Kaiser is not the standard. That prospect is FRIGHTENING! yikes.

I have suffered for almost 4 months
(Anonymous)
2007-09-13 02:03 am UTC (link)
I have Kaiser and I have suffered for almost 4 months with extreme abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant, to where I collapse with pain and wake up every night. I had the same pain last year which began in November, the day after Thanksgiving to be exact, but by February it was not as severe but like a mere toothache (I have a very high tolerance to pain). The only tests that was performed was a CT scan and a choloscopy. I gave up on Kaiser. What really sucks is that I work for a very reputable company but I can only change my insurance carrier every November for the following January. I decided I could live with the toothache pain until the following year. In June of this year, the pain came back again super severe. So far my doctor did 3 cat scans (CTs) and a HIPA test regarding my gallbladder. The technician said there was a problem, but my doctor said everything was alright. I should mention that I also have had blood in my urine (which is only seen in a hospital test, not by the naked eye), extreme swelling in my legs and abdomin. Finally after 22 hours of waiting on hold and talking with Kaiser ( I have documentation) they sent me to a pain medicine doctor who could not understand why I was there. Oh, I forgot to mention that my 2nd primary physician asked me what she should do, because everything seemed fine. And then she sent me to a gastronologist who said that he would order a shot to deaden my nerve as this was a pinched nerve in my stomach. Well, after 2-1/2 weeks, Kaiser did not authorize his procedure and per his direction I stayed off of pain pills. When I called my advocate, she said that he (the gastronologist) was new to Kaiser, and they didn't perform these type of procedures. Ok, when I finally went to see the Pain Medicine doctor, He asked why I had never had a chest x-ray, upper GI, liver scan, etc. He said I have the classic symptoms of congestive heart failure. Also, he mentioned that patients who have been referred to him normally have seen at least 7 specialists and received numerous tests with the diagnosis of unknown cause of pain. He said I was lost in the system. Which is BS, because I called all the time and even complained to have a membership specialist named Belinda. It took me going outside of Kaiser for a consultation, getting the possible reasons for my pain and constantly stating that I am going to sue the organization to get any type of assistance. I still don't know what is wrong, but I have every step of this inadequate process documented and I will sue if something is really wrong with me. PS> I also told them, which they didn't care and seemed to be reading from a response care, is that if this was one of my children going through this pain and they did nothing, I would have went POSTAL on them.

Model for Healthcare???

"Thank you all for helping to make Kaiser Permanente the model for health care delivery in the United States."

Sorry folks, but Kaiser certainly isn't a model for me. They did everything wrong in my case, most importantly Kill My Baby and then hide/destroy the evidence. I certainly hope to God that this is not considered "the model."

If this is good care I would hate to see what bad care is.

They not only kill people...they cover it up and make people who have been hurt already go through all sorts of hassle and more pain. If you're in the same room with a Kaiser PR person, it's like you're in the Twilight Zone. They just keep pushing, pushing, pushing disinformation. It's got to stop, for the sake of both patients and employees.

Kaiser just did an out patient surgery on my wife of 23Years and two day later 02/04/2007 she bleed to death internally due to their error. Kaiser does not care and they kill all the time. We need to work on the malpractice laws set in 1975. I am insulted at what my attorney states I will get for her death. The money will not bring her back but there is not thought how the family survives the loss of income yet alone the emotional trauma.

They do not care!!!!!!!!

Yes, that's the larger point behind them all. Kaiser doesn't care. When people point out all the things Kaiser has done wrong, all the harm they've done to real people, Kaiser just whips out their lawyers and their PR teams. There isn't one person in a position of authority there with the good will, intelligence, and grace who will review the situation quickly, realize that Kaiser did something that profoundly hurt people, and immediately apologize and fix it. Even if it's obvious that Kaiser is in the wrong, the Powers That Be at Kaiser will stonewall and attempt to drag it out for years, compounding the damage by wearing down the person they already harmed and outraging them to their very soul.

Kaiser kills people. If not under the knife, then by the death of a thousand paper cuts.

Kaiser managers taking cues from the Vatican?

I just read that two doctors who worked at the San Francisco Kaiser hospital that did kidney transplants were moved around to another Kaiser hospital and are now accused of killing a man to get his organs faster. This stuff makes me sick to my stomach.

Thanks - I just posted on this. If Kaiser members who have never been hospitalized even had a clue what happens to patients there, they would be stampeding out the door. Kaiser thinks of it as tough love to discourage costly utilization of services.

I have no doubt about Kaiser killing for profit. I think anyone who has experienced losing a loved one thru Kaiser can attest that they certainly don't have the best interests of the patients at heart.

It is cheaper to let people die. Cheaper because then all Kaiser will be stuck with AT THE MOST is $250,000. Looks like Kaiser saw how well MICRA and the outdated malpractice cap of $250,000 from 1975 was working and decided to follow suit. Why would they even WANT to keep people alive. Now, they think they can take peoples kidneys too! Unbelievable.

THE KAISER WAY: Kill the patient (ie, to save on dollars that would go toward lifetime care cost, lost wages, etc.) NOW... let's take your body parts and profit!

As a Kaiser member, you are shelling out money to have your life ruined. They don't want you to thrive cuz it's far too costly.

I agree anything that puts a dollar value on whether a person gets to live should be emphatically avoided. What Kaiser wants is free money: healthy young people who will pay hundreds of dollars a month without utilizing any services.

Absolutely. It is only when these healthy young people start to have health issues or start to get older that they quickly become aware of what they are getting for their money. NOTHING or A BIG hassle and a SCREWED up life. Take your pick.

The financial disaster that is now Healthconnect isn't a suprise to me. You have a CEO with absolutely zero IT training calling the technical shots for the whole organization. The EMR platform decision should have been up to the doctors, nurses, and medical assistants everywhere within Kaiser. Also, KPIT should have a lot more pull when it comes to the implementation of any system, provided there are competant people at the wheel (which I don't think has been the case at all).

Top down fascist leadership doesn't work very well in this case.

Kaiser killed my wife of 23years

My wife went in for a 2 hour out patient surgery. She has never had surgery before and was scared. On 02/04/07 she collasped on me in my house and died on the way to the hospital. Kaiser did not properly finish her surgery and she bleed to death. According to the cornor she had 2/3 of he blood in her belly she never had a chance. She went if for cysts on her overy and the removed the overy and had an inter on her now she is dead. The malpractice system is wrong the limits have been set since 1975 to protect the doctors not the suvivors or the victums. If my wife was a celeberty or a goverment official they would pay big for exposure avoidence but since we are just regular people they insult me.

I am so sorry your comment wasn't posted immediately. This is terrible - please let me know if you want me to post it in the main section of the blog on top of the comments.

And I agree that Kaiser behavior continually insults anyone they consider "the little people." Of course it would be a different story if they considered you a V.I.P. Kaiser's own doctors often go elsewhere for their own medical treatment.

I am so very sorry that this happened to you and your wife....
No money could take away the emotional fallout, nor the dire life consequences to both you and your wife....but, yes, you are absolutely correct in that the malpractice cap does nothing but encourage further malpractice (especially at Kaiser)....

I was admitted to the e.r. on July 26 2006 unfortunately that's my birthday. After a long wait I was taken back to the er room. I had been vomiting for 14 hours and couldn't stop. Also I had a fever of 102 degrees. The bitchy nurse started an i.v. I was alone and wanting my husband to join me. I found out later that he was being detained by some power hugry security guard. My husband was right outside the door, I could here him arguing with the idiot guard telling him that he needed to join me. Finally my husband was allowed to come in to the e.r. He walked over to me and noticed a large puddle of what looked like water on the floor. Then he looked at me and noticed I was sitting in a pool of my own blood. I didn't feel it because I had been given morphine for my stomach pain. He hollered for a nurse, she came over and said, " Oh dear, it looks like someone didn't hook up your i.v. correctly. If my husband had been deatained for five more minutes I would have bled out and quietly passed away while no one was paying attention. When My husband became angry about what had occurred, a male nurse puffed himself up and got in my husbands face, I thought they were going to have a fist fight. That is not how a nurse should act in that situation. He should have tried to comfort my husband, not escalate the situation with attitude. Just to add to my already upset stomach the lady in the bed next to me was severely mistreated. The male nurses were so mean to her she was swearing at them! With no teeth in her poor old mouth. They were angry at her because she was gagging when they shoved a tube down her throat. After several attempts they decided to numb her throat No shit sherlock! Anyone would gag from having a tube shoved in your throat! They were just to lazy to go get the medication she needed and they wanted to save time. What a tragidy. I went to an e.r. in Lake Tahoe this Labor Day weekend. They fortunat don't have Kaiser in Tahoe so I could go where I wanted. I could not believe the difference in attitude of staff. Everyone was cheerful, helpful and sympathetic. Plus, I only had to wait ten minutes before being helped. If I could I would leave Kaiser, but like all of you, I have no choice. Most Sincerely M. Storelee
